Today a Federal Court blocked federal funds from being used for stem cell research. US District Court Judge Royce Lamberth ruled that the plaintiffs would be irreparably harmed and that despite attempts to separate the derivation of human embryonic stem cells from the research process, "the two cannot be separated" because culling those stem cells destroys an embryo.
This has been an issue that has garnered much debate. The Obama administration lifted the rules put in place during the Bush administration that kept "We the People's" money from being used for new lines of stem cell research. But to me this issue begs the question just because technology exists to do something does that mean we should do it.
Adult stem cells have shown great promise in curing diseases and using them does not destroy human life. There are numerous articles published old and new that illustrate the difference in using adult stem cells vs. embryonic stem cells. So I have to wonder why the push to destroy life in the name of saving life, especially if one does not have too?

I am glad the judge has issued the injunction, the slippery slope embryonic stem cell research places our society on is not one we need to go down. It seems in too many areas of life we are sliding deeper into the mire and I shutter at the thought many times of what we do just because we can or the technology exists so we go for it. Unintended consequences seem to be forgotten or not thought about and all too often it seems that ethics are being chucked out the window.
Technology and forward progress are wonderful things, but our government needs to stop and look at all sides of an issue and not just whip off orders so that a certain portion of the base are satisfied. Just because we can does not mean we should.

It has been a long time but Today I am grateful for:
1. New beginnings in things large and small.
2. For friends old and new, who love me even in the darkness.
3. Because I am smiling more often than before.
4. Because life is not fair.
5. For this passage, which I may have used before but is still true:
"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation." 1 Peter 4:12-13
